우리는 관심분야가 같아서 서로 책도 빌리고 잡지도 빌리고 이것저것 정보교환을 매일같이 한다. (물론 회사일도 해가면서 ^^)
몇일전에도 이 잡지 얘길 하다가 제니퍼가 이 잡지의 Editor-in-Chief가 쓴 책을 샀다며 내앞에 내밀었다. 정원이 없는 나에겐 정원사진이 있는 그 책표지가 끌리진 않았지만 내가 좋아하는 잡지의 편집장이 쓴거니 받자마자 그날 읽기 시작했다.
이 어지러운 세상 속에, 복잡한 지하철 속에서도 이 책은 읽는 그 순간만큼은 나에게 평안을 가져다 줬다. 진정한 집(home)의 의미가 뭔지 알려준다.
집은 단순한 의식주 수준의 장소가 아닌 더 나아가서 우리의 영혼과 연결된 것임을 알려준다.
화장실도 편안한 나만의 장소가 될수 있다는걸 보여준다.
남자아이 둘을 키우면서도 풀타임으로 회사다니며 살림하며, 멋진 집과 정원을 가꾸어 나갈수 있다는걸 보여준다. 집과 정원을 돌보는건 결코 일이 아닌 하나의 therapy라는걸 보여준다.

When Browning and her husband of 15 years divorced, she kept the house and garden they had shared in Westchester, but for a long time she was too depressed to care about where she lived. Gradually, she begins to see that working on the house she had neglected and transforming it into a home again is a way to recover from her despondency.
In these short, elegant essays, Browning, a former editor-in-chief of House & Garden, muses on the aspects of domestic life that revived her and shows how she healed her heart and her home at the same time. That symbol of doomed love, the master bedroom, for example, she had abandoned.
She fills the bathroom with comfortable fuiture and flowers and leas to enjoy lounging in the tub while looking out the window at the moon. A garden bench, a fireplace, chairs grouped together for companionship, the long-neglected garden, impractical objects like a grand piano or oate candlesticks, the kitchen, a place for companionship as well as “a nice place to be lonely” all these she comes to revere.
Soon even the moss-covered bricks in her crumbling driveway delight her, as do ordinary rituals like weeding the garden, planting a tree and cleaning her closets so she can enjoy the memories they contain. Browning has written a warm and graceful paean to the commonplace, imbuing everything she contemplates with magic.
